Sacred Heart Catholic Primary School

Client: Archdiocese of Westminster / Governors of Sacred Heart Catholic Primary School

Project value: £7.2M

Completion: May 2008

A shortage of primary school places within the London Borough of Hillingdon gave the Governors of the Sacred Heart School the opportunity to redevelop their tired and unsuitable accommodation. A DCSF Targeted Capital Funding grant allowed this highly successful school to realise their long-term aspirations for a first class educational facility.

The original buildings serving 460 pupils were demolished and redeveloped on a phased basis to provide a brand new 630 place three-form entry primary school. A fundamental part of the brief was the need to rebuild around a working school on a very restricted and awkward site.

Externally the new building has been designed to sit low to the ground so as not to adversely affect the adjacent housing and the important views across the green belt. Internally the school is designed around a spacious social corridor, which runs the length of the school on each floor. Each year group is arranged with three classbases around a central resource and group teaching area. The front of the school, with flexible hall spaces, IT suite, meeting rooms, offices and welfare facilities is designed to be used by both school and local community.
