Wonersh & Shamley Green C of E Infant School

Client: Guildford Diocesan Board for Education / Governors of Wonersh & Shamley Green C of E Infant School

Project value: £675,000

Completion: February 2011

The school’s existing hall was totally unsuitable for delivery of the Key Stage 1 curriculum.  Ceilings were far too low for many PE activities and the hall space was circa 40% smaller than DfE minimum requirements.  Kitchen and dining facilities were contained within a 1950s temporary HORSA building.

As the school is in the sensitive Green Belt a sympathetic approach to the design was needed.  The Local Planning Authority were impressed by the contemporary design prepared by DHP and, despite there being a strong presumption against Green Belt development, approved the scheme, recognising the need for enhanced accommodation.

The new multi-purpose hall provides a spacious environment for children to explore creative activities including music, movement and drama, an intrinsic part of the current challenging curriculum whilst allowing parents to join pupils in acts of worship and other whole school events.
