St Cuthbert’s Catholic Primary School

Client: Diocese of Arundel & Brighton / Governors of St Cuthbert’s Catholic Primary School

Project value: £260k

Completion: September 2010

St Cuthbert’s Catholic Primary School was founded with 71 pupils on role when two schools (St Joseph’s Camberwell and St Bernard’s Stepney) were evacuated to Englefield Green during the Second World War. The thriving school moved to their current site in 1963 and currently have 210 pupils on role.

For many years the school has been short of space, with a single hall used for dining, PE, drama, assemblies etc. In addition, the school staffroom had become inadequate for current numbers of teaching staff. The school began saving and were finally in a position to commission their ‘Realising the Dream’ building in 2009, when DfE match funding was awarded.

A very tight and finite budget called for an innovative approach to design and construction of the new studio and staffroom annex. The result of the school’s hardwork has resulted in a beautiful new space within a modern glass and render envelope beneath a mono pitched roof.
